Description

Welcome to Swaying Pines, a serene architectural retreat tucked away on an expansive wooded lot at the end of a magical private dirt road in East Orleans. Designed by a graduate of the Harvard Graduate School of Design in the mid-1960s, this original modern home is a striking example of thoughtful, era-defining architecture. The main house was built in the late 1960s, with a complementary guest house added in the 1980s, and together they create a harmonious compound connected by adjoining decks and a network of outdoor living spaces. The design intentionally optimizes natural light, cross-ventilation, and a seamless indoor/outdoor flow, allowing the home to feel fully immersed in its woodland surroundings.

This ethereal oasis offers a rare sense of privacy and tranquility, alive with birdsong and local wildlife, yet ideally positioned for enjoying Cape Cod’s waterways. Residents and guests of Mayflower Point enjoy access to a small private beach on Pilgrim Lake, a peaceful freshwater retreat that is far less crowded than the public access points. Two additional private saltwater landings on Kent’s Bay and the Namequoit River provide exceptional opportunities for kayaking, paddleboarding, and exploring Pleasant Bay. After a day on the water or at the beach, rinse off in the outdoor shower — there’s nothing quite like warm water under the open sky.

Arriving at the property, the home appears to rise organically into the tree canopy, blending effortlessly with the landscape. Inside, sliding glass doors flood the living spaces with natural light and open onto sun-drenched decks, while vaulted ceilings enhance the airy, open feel. The home’s modern design is complemented by multi-colored lighting and a charming collection of vintage board games from the 1970s and 1980s, adding personality and a nostalgic touch. The well-equipped kitchen flows into multiple dining areas, offering several options for indoor and outdoor meals — perfect for casual breakfasts, family dinners, or al fresco evenings under the trees. Sleeping accommodations are thoughtfully spread across the main house and guest house, featuring king, queen, and twin options, along with 3.5 baths. The guest house also includes a walk-in closet, providing added comfort and convenience for longer stays or extended families.

Swaying Pines is perfectly situated to enjoy the very best of Cape Cod. Skaket Beach on Cape Cod Bay and Nauset Beach on the Atlantic Ocean are each just three miles away, offering miles of sand, surf, and unforgettable sunsets. Nearby Kent’s Point features scenic, dog-friendly hiking trails, while Orleans town center — just over two miles away — offers charming shops, restaurants, and everyday conveniences. Chatham is eight miles away for additional exploration. Whether you’re drawn by the home’s iconic architecture, the private water access, or the peaceful woodland setting, Swaying Pines delivers a rare blend of design, comfort, adventure, and serenity.

Our stay was magnificent! The location is ideal for exploring Cape Cod. The place is truly uniquecombining thoughtful design with a secluded environment that creates a near-therapeutic atmosphere. Our only regret? We wished we had more time to enjoy the house itself, but we were busy discovering the beauty of Cape Cod! Thank you so much! Were already dreaming of coming back.

Our recent stay was great. The property has a lot of character and is accurately described in the listing. There was plenty of room to spread out. Centrally located to the beach and town, it was very easy to get to around during the day. Check-In was simple and quick and the host was easy to get a hold of.

The experience of staying at Swaying Pines well exceeded expectations. And expectations were high. Six humans and a doggo came out for a week. The house is unique: simultaneously spacious and intimate. There is ample space, indoors and out, for hanging out singly, in a small group, and all together as a party. The kitchen is comfortable and large enough to work together making meals. The location feels cloistered, reached by a dirt track, among a forest of pitch pines and walls of rhododendrons. With Orleans' center just a few minutes away by car. We did need to converse with the host on a question or two and they were quick to respond with clear, friendly responses. They run an outstanding rental. All of us, dog included, would happily stay again.

We stayed at this house last year and were very happy to stay again. The house is located in a quiet wooded area that is just a little removed from the areas of Cape Cod that can be so busy in the summer. But it is only a few minutes walk from a nice family-friendly pond, a few minutes drive from another beautiful pond, and about 5 minutes drive to an ocean beach or to Orleans town. For a family of introverts who each like to have our own space at some point during the day, the house is nicely laid out with different areas and two decks. It is not a large house, but rather very thoughtfully designed, and it has been very nice for us.

A wonderful Cape rental! The house is a midcentury gem: charming and functional, outfitted with everything one needs away from home. Natural light in every room, screens that open the entire house up for cross ventilation and fresh air, two large decks, outdoor shower (bonus: hot water and great water pressure), and nice shared spaces. The house is surrounded by woods, so feels very private. But the best part is the location - walkable to a beautiful fresh water lake and a salt water bay inlet - perfect for SUPs and kayaks. And only 10 minute drive to 2 great Orleans beaches. Host was accommodating, helpful, and responsive.

We had a wonderful experience. We were a total of 5 adults and the layout of the house provided both common spaces for us to eat and relax together as well as room for us to be separate. We loved having two decks with plenty of seating. There is a nice gas grill and the outdoor shower is perfect after the beach. The house is tucked away in the woods and quiet. The location was great for us and we rode bikes to the beach and the nearby lakes. The description is very accurate. The design and decor of the home make it the perfect place to unwind and take in the beauty of the area.
